GEOLOGY AND SOILS

The natural materials that lie beneath a site sometimes has a direct influence upon what is possible on the surface. The parent geological material produces the type of soil that covers it. When this soil it wet or waterlogged it can also change significantly.

The geology underlying the battlefield is generally chalk (C5-4) covered with a fine homogeneous light brown subsoil, which varies in depth across the area (LP).

At some time in the mid- twentieth century (Trabot-Tramecourt 2007) a drilling rig was set up to explore the land next to the Calvary enclosure. The location of this exploration is marked on the geology map. This procedure had consequences for later archaeological excavations.
